Does the dark side of the moon really exist?

I’m not talking about the Pink Floyd album, but does the dark side of the moon really exist? It is commonly believed that the side of the moon facing away from us is dark and the side facing us is light. This is untrue, and I will explain why in a bit but first, this poses an interesting question in itself:

Why does one side of the moon always face us?

The moon used to have tides just like the Earth. These tides were made of rocks. The gravitational pull of the Earth pulled rocks across the surface of the moon as it spun. The huge weight of the rocks travelling around the moon slowed the rotation over millions of years untill it was spinning at the same speed it rotates around the Earth. The whole process is called Tidal Locking; this is why the same side of the earth is always facing us.

Does the dark side of the moon really exist?

So, going back to the original question: does the dark side of the moon really exist? Well, no. The side facing away from us gets as much light as the side facing us. As it rotates and orbits, the sun moves around the whole moon just as it does on Earth. We have phases of the moon because we are constantly facing the same part of the moon, exactly like days turning into night on Earth, only taking a month to complete one cycle. Just because you can’t see the other side of the Earth does not mean that it is constantly shrouded in darkness.
