We would like to think that our justice system is infallible, after the man-years that it has been up and the multiple opportunities they have had to adjust the law where there was otherwise an unfair ruling or circumstance. Unfortunately, the biggest problem comes from the fact that at the end of the day, it is a human construct, and so like everything else it is doomed to imperfections and the occasional false accusation.
Mary Jones was convicted in 1981 of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison. What had happened was that her boyfriend was involved in a drug deal and killed somebody, and prior to this she was forced by gunpoint to the place where the deal was made.
It wasn’t until 2006 when law students at the University of Southern California re-opened her case, and argued that she had zero options available to her at the time. Upon presenting their case to the judge, Mary was released from jail after a LONG 32 years in prison.
Fortunately for her, she got along well with everybody in jail and cultivated the skill of patience, so it wasn’t entirely bad. But she also has the blessing of being with her children and grandchildren for the rest of her days!
